Both are useful for different songs / styles.
It takes time to learn either well. I do both but I play acoustic only. A pick allows me to play bass, rhythm, and lead at the same time.. also allows tripplettes... My finger-picking allows me to do several styles.. Scruggs..... Bluegrass.... Travis.. arpeggio.... cotton picking... and Atkins styles.
It depends on what songs you wish to do.
I can make my martin sound as bright and pretty with my fingers as I can with a pick. Chet Atkins used finger picking on electric guitars very successfully... so one of the above responders is incorrect.
I would suggest you learn both.... each will serve you well.
