I have seen him a few times. Believe it or not, I once saw him and his band performing at a shopping mall (Springfield Mall in Northern Virginia) and he blew the roof off the place. You could hear him from a mile away! He was soloing while going up and down the escalators - it was a real hoot!
Maynard was always well-known for using young, unknown musicians in his bands and was changing personnel constantly. Over the years, he launched many young musicians' careers, most notably, Peter Erskine who went on to Weather Report. I particularly like his 'Conquistador' and 'MF Horn 4&5 - Live at Jimmy's' albums the most.
