If you want 90s, finish with 2Pac and Biggie. But start with Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, Naughty By Nature, Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Gang Starr, anything from former NWA members (mostly Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E). Jay-z's Reasonable Doubt, Wu Tang Clan, Nas. Don't bother with anything after 1998...it went downhill and commercial for a while.
If you want 80s, try NWA, Grandmaster Flash, Whodini, Run DMC, LL Cool J (no later than Mama Said Knock You Out, which is actually 90s), Afrika Bambaataa, Slick Rick, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Too Short.
If you want 70s: Sugarhill Gang.
