What would've happened to Joy division had Ian lived?
I think they would've had quick fleeting success in the U.S. as the idiots in the disco and new wave scenes would group them with duran duran and human league , not the the punk band they associated with.
Yet I think they would have immense success in europe into the mid-late nighties, when they would either become New Order or just break up.
Answers:
There were basically two options. One, they would've stayed together and continued to release hit and miss albums like so many bands from that era (The Fall, REM), or they would've split up and done their own thing without much commercial success(Bauhaus, anyone?).
