Need help on how to start my singing career!?

Hey everybody! From what just about everyone says I sing very well, I can do revis creed and a few like that easier than most. I've always wanted to actually put it to use but I'm afraid I have no clue where to start. I've never sang into a mic, or tried to perform before. I'd like to join a group or refine my singing talent or whatever it may be but I need a direction. How does one go about getting into a band? I get this little nervous bundle in my stomach thinking of trying to sing my all in front of the band too. I wouldn't have a problem at all with crowds because at that point...I'd already be accepted. Like I said I know I'm good just not sure how to show that to someone. Also when I sing for a good amount of time my voice hurts a little, not sure why some days better than others. AND I usually sing a tiny bit better after a cigar...I'll stop rambling but maybe you guys could shine some light here! How can I test myself to see for myself, I can sing well enough?

Almost every community has a community theater...I highly recommend getting involved...any stage performance will halp you with that nervous bundle, and working on musicals with a theater is excellent vocal training, no matter what kind of music you like to sing. Plus, theater is a great place to meet people and make contacts in the performing circuit, and it's totally free to get involved in...that would be an excellent start.
