Song writing, how should i "go about it?"?!

Question:

Song writing, how should i "go about it?"?

well, i have learnt some basic song writing tips. the song im writing is influenced in style by november rain, so its a romantic style song. i was however wondering how i should go about it.

i want to be able to play it on the piano and sing and i was wondering if i should

a: start writing the lyrics and make it up as i go along
b: write down loads of sentences that rhyme and choose the best and fit them togeither
c: start writting the song intrumental part on the piano
d: write the song with the lyrics.
e: sing the "tune" to the song in my head while writing, and only base the lyrics so that they fit into the tune i had in mind.

see because im not sure if i should write the lyrics and then make the tune, or think of a tune and write the lyrics based on the tune.

i think i have the rhyming right though. i know most people just add rhymes in for the sake, ex: "when i see her walk alone i cant help but remember when we where on the phone." this rhyme doesnt seem to fit really, its seems a bit silly you would think back to a phone call when she was walking by herself. they just threw that in cos it rhyme. however:

"if i could fix the wheel that drove us apart, would the lord resurect us. if i could mend the strings of a broken heart, would our angel protect us."

the rhyming seems to match more, it sounds like its just fallen into place with the lyrics, not put there just cos it rhymes

Answers:

You are putting WAY to much thought into this. Song writing isn't as methodical as you've outlined. Good songs come naturally and from the heart. After you've come up with a basic melody and notes, then you go back and change up verses, choruses and lyrics.
