It depends on how you look at it. Beyonce definitely has the better stage presence, and anyone who has been to The Beyonce Experience thus far will know. As far as the vocals, I would have to give it to Beyonce, but only by an inch. They both have about the same full voice vocal range (YES, I have heard Kelly sing an F#5, the same note Beyonce sings in "Listen") but Beyonce just pulls ahead with her whistle register. Beyonce also executes her melismas with more ease.
On the other hand, Kelly is so much more relatable. You really have to question the authenticity of songs like "Irreplaceable," "Ring the Alarm," and "Green Light" when we know that Beyonce has been with Jay for like 4 years. As for Kelly, songs like "Still In Love With My Ex" and "Love" definitely hold some meaning for her, due to her highly publicized breakup with Roy Williams. I can definitely tell that she's singing from her heart (like she did on her performance of "Bad Habit" on the DC Live in Atlanta DVD). And as for their sophomore albums, I'm leaning toward Ms. Kelly more because it suits Kelly the best. B'Day is great, but once I see that shy, reserved Beyonce in interviews, I can't help but wonder how she even came up with "Get Me Bodied" or "Check On It."
It all boils down to who is the better singer or who is the more real singer. Both of them are at the top of my list, but if Kelly just gets her PR straight, Beyonce will have some tough competition because Ms. Kelly is full of singles.
