I started a band with my friends, but we're not exactly getting anywhere... tips!

Question:

I started a band with my friends, but we're not exactly getting anywhere... tips?

I'm 13 and two of my friends and I have started a band. One plays guitar, the other keyboard, and I play bass and sing. The thing is, we're not exactly all very talented, so we have to work around a lot of problems, like the guitarist can't play a lot of the songs, and a lot of songs don't have a keyboard part. The keyboard-ist/er is the only one who can keep a beat on the drums, so he plays sometimes, and I'm the only one who can carry a tune, but I don't have a great voice, but I sing. The first song we tried was When I Come Around by Green Day, but we couldn't put it together. Next we tried Boston by Augustana, but the guitarist complained that she couldn't play the part and that it would be like a piano recital for the keyboardist. We don't get to meet very often either. Any tips/ help with any of these problems?

Answers:

Start jamming. Get the guitarist to start doing a chord sequence they are comfortable with, you join in on bass and let the keyboard player accompany and solo over the top of it. Take turns at solos. That way you all know what you are doing and playing to your ability limits. Also jamming will help you get better individually and as a group. You might even find a few songs pop out of it. Have a cassette recorder running so if anything good does happen you don't spend the rest of the evening trying to work out what you did. :-)
