Can anyone explain to me the FIGURING OF UNESSENTIAL NOTES (harmony)?!

Question:

Can anyone explain to me the FIGURING OF UNESSENTIAL NOTES (harmony)?

Unessential notes as in passing notes, auxilliary notes, appoggiaturas, etc.

there's something that says "V 8 7"
is "8" or "7" the unessential note, or are they both?

no, actually . . . my first question should be, what do the "8" and "7" actually mean?

Answers:

your essential notes are your 1,3,5, of any key and adding the 7 makes chords a major 7, so I would have to say that the 8 is the unessential note. the V or the 5th is ALWAYS an essential note along with the 1st and 3rd then you add the 7th, 9th, and 13th to develop more dissonant harmonies. BTW are you taking college music theory? where? sounds interesting
