Help songwriting?!

Question:

Help songwriting?

I play guitar, and I play bass and sing in a band. I've been trying to write my own music, but I can't seem to be able to without looking back at it and throwing it out. Tips?

Answers:

Perhaps you are trying too hard.We are our worst critics after all.I never think about writing ,I just start playing and relax. When I play something that stands apart from the normal warm up stuff,I know that I am entering the zone that is perfect for creating and I start to pay attention and expound on the musical conceept. As far as lyrics go,there is usually something that has happened during the day that was either wonderful or disapointing or horrible or amazing but, whatever the event was it can be a good place to start. And of course, you don't have to be literal. For example;you could have just broken up with your lover...you could write it out as an epic crushing blow to your heart that leaves you in a raging state of emotions that leave you no choice but to exact revenge on the one person who professed their undying love to you.A thesaurus is a very useful tool as well as the forementioned approach of exageration and dramatic inflection. But,whatever your approach is don't throw away your stuff,as suggested by someone else it might be your best music.I know this first hand because I threw away over a hundred songs that I wrote because they were so dark and unlike me.Hindsight being 20/20,it was foolish because they could have been rewritten to reflect more appropriately my current state of drama-free happiness.
