Best way to go about learning violin?!

Question:

Best way to go about learning violin?

i am 20 and really want to learn violin but the only proper music lessons i have ever had are piano lessons. i was wondering if any violin players could answer these questions, keeping in my mind that i realise it is a very difficult instrument and it can be hard to even use the bow properly.

1. what should i look out for when buying a secondhand violin. (i only care that it is playable).
2. what size is best for medium height/build adult?
3. what should i look out for when getting lessons?
4. is there any good websites/books for learning basics?
5. how long before i begin to get the hangs of basics with practice obv.(weeks, months?)
thank you v. much

Answers:

ok umm...
1. just go to a reliable violin/music shop near you. You should be able to try it out before you buy it. If they don't let you... run away... fast.
2. you should get a full size. the 3/4 or 1/2 size are just for kids.

My sister took piano and then started violin and she took lessons under the Suzuki method, but i think that's more for children to grow while learning the violin. I would suggest to you to look through your city's craigslist or something to find a teacher. Your teacher should know about teaching adults and get you to learn to love the violin and play it with the right stance and feeling.

about 5 hmm i dunno... probably about a month. You already know how to read music since you had piano lessons but there are different notations to learn for violin (like... which finger you use... or no fingers... or bow up or bow down... i think) so you will have to get used to those. Also you'll have to get used to the playing position and bending your hand over the neck.... ughhhhhhh
