How do I read or play tenor sax with a music score sheet written for piano?!

Question:

How do I read or play tenor sax with a music score sheet written for piano?

Or how can I transpose the piano score sheet for tenor sax so that i can play with the piano?

Answers:

While just giving you what each note would be would be the easiest way to fix your problem, it doesn't offer a long term solution of you actually learning to transpose. I will give you tips and rules to live by for transposition.
1. Remember "the rule of C". This is that if an instrument plays a C, it sounds the key of the instrument. For a tenor saxophone, it sounds a Bb. For a flute, it sounds C, for alto, it sounds Eb. Now you need to think in reverse. If you want the instrument to sound a C, you need to play the note in the opposite direction. For a tenor to sound a C, you need to play a D.
2. Key changes. Remember that every transposing instrument does not play in the concert key. When you are asked to play a concert Bb scale in school, a tenor saxophone plays the C major scale. An alto plays the G major scale. So therefore, when the concert key is Bb, the tenor is in the key of C (2 flats cancelled or 2 sharps added, however you want to think of it), and an alto is in the key of G (2 flats cancelled and 1 sharp added, or 3 sharps added).
Now it is just taking these rules and tips and applying them over and over again. It takes a lot of use to be able to transpose quickly, and if you do it enough, eventually you can do it by sight. Good luck. :-)
