Whats with the electrical tape being wrapped around the microphone?!

Whats with the electrical tape being wrapped around the microphone?

I am a singer, and recently i have seen many bands using a microphone wrapped in colored electrical tape. Here is a picture to show what i mean. Please tell me if you know the point of this.

They tape the mic and the cord so the sound controller will know which mic and cord he is controlling at the mixer .
