Getting vibrato??!

Question:

Getting vibrato??

I want to learn to vibrato, but I don't like to sing in front of people, so I can't really practice at all unless no one is home. I don't have the courage right now to sing in front of people, but maybe that will come later. So here is my question. Do I HAVE TO practice a lot or go to a vocal coach to learn vibrato?

P.S. I'm 14, and my voice has already changed. (Once or twice at least) Do I have to wait longer to get a natural vibrato?

Answers:

The first answerer has the right idea. Everyone has a natural vibrato. Some people unconsciously know how to connect their voices a little better to the body in order to hear the vibrato. Some have a little trouble, but yours is there. Of course, a vocal coach would help you tremendously.

I read your question on your voice change, and LynnDrop's answer hit the nail on the head. And I really think the reason you are having a hard time with vibrato and your vocal problems with high notes is your breathing technique. Learn diaphragmatic breathing. Instead of high breathing (which consists of your shoulders and chest moving up), concentrate on the area below your pectorals. Right now as you sit, place your hands parallel to eachother on your abdomen flat with the tips of your middle fingers touching. Inhale by inflating your abdomen like a balloon. Don't move your shoulders or anything else but your abdomen. It should get fat. Notice your tips of the middle fingers are parted. Now exhale slowly. Don't push it out. Let it naturally release. When you are done, your middle fingertips will touch again. Now try it over and over until you get used to it. Now..sing a note, any note. Inhale, using the same practice with your hands on your abdomen filling it like a balloon. Now sing the vowel sound "AH" on the note. Hold it as long as you can. Repeat the same exercise going up in tone. The more you practice this, you quicker you will find your natural vibrato as you hold the note. If it doesn't come immediately, its ok. Keep practicing. You will hear it if you breathe correctly. Its going to feel funny, but you will get used to it. Also make sure you are relaxed. And uptight body can squeeze the voice, therefore killing the vibrato.

Most of my students find their vibrato very quickly just by learning how to breathe. Don't feel discouraged. Keep practicing! Your vibrato is already there. And remember, vibrato is the extremely slight waivering in pitch. It isn't extremely apparent and wobbly. So yours might sound smaller than you expect. Good luck to you and keep on singing!!!!
