The music in the movie black snake moan?!

Question:

The music in the movie black snake moan?

I have a few questions about the music in the movie. is it called blues rock or blues? also if you know anything about this genre of music, can you please tell me some good artists to listen to who play that style?

Answers:

It's the blues - there's a little blues-rock from the Black Keys, but it's a wide and fuzzy line where you cross over from one to the other.

Beside the Black Keys, there's music on the soundtrack from RL Burnside (his grandson Cedric was the drummer for Samuel Jackson's band in the movie), Son House, the North Mississippi Allstars, Jessie Mae Hemphill, and many others. Those are all good starting points.

A lot of the music from the movie was a style that comes out of north Mississippi (different from delta blues out of south Mississippi). It's not always easy to listen to if you're new to the blues - minor keys, drones, pretty raw and unpolished sometime. If you like the style, some other artists from that region that are worth a listen; Junior Kimbrough, Robert Belfour, and Otha Turner. Check out Fat Possum records, they cover a lot of the artists from that region - www.fatpossum.com

Others, in a variety of styles and eras - Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Buddy Guy, Duane Allman, or the Allman Brothers, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Susan Tedeschi, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, I could go on and on. Listen to the music, feel it, enjoy it. Welcome to the blues.
