pitch shift - This effect shifts a signal up or down in pitch. One application of pitch shifting is pitch correction. It is also used intentionally for aesthetic effect in such pop songs as Cher's Believe, Brown Boy's Superman, and Madonna's Die Another Day.
A Vocoder creates synthed, or artificial vocal sounds from electronic signal input. No real voice is utilized in the process. The effect you are interested in takes the real voice and alters it to create the effect. (via pitch shift)
