There is a difference. There are several reasons that they are expensive. It is true that one reason is name brand. The name is known for quality instruments, but that is not the only reason.
One reason is the quality. The fact that the instruments have lasted so long is a tribute to the quality. If it was made with poor structure, it would warp and crack, even with top notch care, but a well made instrument that is taken care of can last a life time.
Second is the fact that with age a quality instrument can sound better, if they are taken care of. That is what has happened with Stradivarius. They are a quality instrument that has always aged well.
The reason that we can't not reproduce the same sound is because of the age of the wood, the stains used, the varnish can't be reproduced together. They have tried before. Now if you are not an expert, you would not be able to tell the difference, but if you were, you would understand the differences.
Just because people collect these instruments does not mean they are the best. It is all up to personal preference. If someone prefers an instrument made last year, then that is what they should play.
