The writers, Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics), were deliberately ambiguous about the subject of this song. This question has been in my mind forever and I can never decide the answer.
As a musician, I have played this song so many times and while I play, I try to visualize the subject, like many musicians do. I have to say that I have visualized a woman and the state an equal number of times while playing this. This song has begged this same question since 1930, the year it was written.
