When can I start learning to play piccolo?!

When can I start learning to play piccolo?
I am in the eighth grade and have been playing the flute in advanced band for 2 years. I am interested in also playing the piccolo. I was wondering at what age(or grade level) can you double instruments?
Answers:
I play flute too and have been ever since my 5th grade year. You can learn to play anytime you want, but you can only actually play in the band with the piccolo in 10th grade and up. I am actually looking for a piccolo at the moment! But make sure you talk to your band director about playing it. : ]
