How can I sing in public for a church praise team?!

Question:

How can I sing in public for a church praise team?

I'm not a trained singer. I was somewhat forced, along with three other people, to lead worship (I was also playing guitar) for our youth group. When all four of us got up to the mics to practice, though, no sound came out, at least not loud enough for the mics to pick up even at their highest level (without producing feedback from the amps behind.) So I guess this question comes down to how to sing louder (without worrying about my voice cracking...) and play and sing at the same time. Also, some of the songs were too high, so I had to sing an octave lower, which came out even softer, and it was on the verge of being too low. Any help? Suggestions besides singing lessons (parents...)? I'm 14, by the way.

Answers:

I am a worship leader. One suggestion would be to see about wireless mics, the type that fit around your ear. I have a few people on my team with very quiet voices and those mics seem to help. One fabulous tool I have used every week is the CCLI web site. For a fee of around 179.00 a year, you can download any song you want and transpose it to the key you are comfortable singing in. If this is not possible, use your capo. Our guitar players use theirs all the time and it's wonderful. As far as singing louder, I would recommend singing lessons so you can be taught the proper breathing techniques to avoid cracking voices. I do think singing the songs in comfortable keys is probably the quickest solution for you. Also, keep in mind you are singing for an audience of One, your Heavenly Father and He will continue to bless you and your team with knowledge and resources to help your team. Feel free to e-mail me if you ever need further advice. I lead in a church that has a blended music service, meaning we sing contemporary and hymns, which is a challenge at times.
