Question:

My brother is going to play the bassoon. What would be a good brand of bassoon should we buy.?

and should it be plastic or wood?

Answers:

Selmer wood. Try to find a used one in good shape, if you can. Getting a Fox bocal will improve the instrument more. Fox bassoons (wood) are better but more expensive. If your brother is older and responsible, Fox may be the better choice but Selmer is a good instrument anyways. Always go with wood (except in the rare circumstance of using a bassoon for a marching band, then you'd use a plastic one). Along with the bassoon, your brother will need reeds, a seat strap, possibly a hand rest, and cork grease (only to be used on corks. Some bassoons have thread wrapped joints and using cork grease on those loosens the wrapping and makes it fall apart). Fox has thread joints and Selmer has cork. Personally, I prefer the thread joints because they're more durable when treated well, but beginners do better with cork joints. Fox is a great brand for intermediate and advanced students but Selmer works well for everyone. I started on a Fox 222 but I now own a Selmer Signet (wood) with a Fox bocal and it is a very good instrument which occasionally surprises professional musicians with the tone quality it gives me. I always recommend the Selmers to new students but it's a toss up on which is best, so I guess if your brother has the choice between the two, it's probably best to choose the cheaper one.
