Singer/songwriters out there- please help me out?

Ive been trying desperately for months now to try and write some music on my own. I play acoustic guitar, petty well Id say. Going to write my own is a huge challenge though. I dont know if it's because Im looking to write really good stuff that sounds like the great modern artists like John Mayer, Dave Matthews etc Maybe Im too critical on myself. I have a terrible problem with the lyric writing also. I get COMPLETELY stuck whenever I try to put anything into words as a song. Im not looking for Dylan type material just stuff that I can play with my family, friends, etc. I just honestly cant think of ANYTHING to ever write about. I'm not really passionate about anything but I know I want to write about the important experiences I have. I love music, sports, friends, basic stuff but I cant put these things into words. If you could share your approaches to writing music and words with me and maybe even some of your work and how you made it I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks

mate, your gunna hate to hear it, and i know i sound like a tool saying it, but with lyrics, either you have it, or you don't.
but dont give up hope.
first thing you gotta do, is stop trying to be like other people.
i did that for ages when i was little, till i got told to find my own sound.
its a bit scary, trying to do it on your own, cause u look at the stuff u have been playing, and it all by famous musos who have made it, and you look at your stuff, and think, its not as good.
but the thing is, you arent those muso, and you have your own voice, and your own sound.
u say you arent passionate about stuff.
surely your family is important to you, or u say u like sport.
first thing i ever wrote was a song about the sydney swans.
sounds lame, but that what it was.
just keep trying, and as your write more stuff, you'll start to find a sound u like, and u can start to concentrate on that.
it takes a while, and u wont be a legend straight away.
its got tio the point now where i can here a guitar riff for a song my guitarist has written, and i can write the lyrics to it as he pays it, and can sing it straight off the top of my head without having to work to hard.
and as annoying as this is gunna sound, start writing poetry.
u'll be suprised at how similar writing poetry is to writing lyrics.
find ur own voice mate.
u can do it.
