Do you think if an indie band came out with something legendary?!

Question:

Do you think if an indie band came out with something legendary?

along the lines of who's next, dark side of the moon, The Doors, Sgt. Pepper, Are you experienced. ect...

Do you think it would top the album charts and be published as a great album or do you think people would have to "discover" it?

Answers:

For my money, OK Computer didn't exactly blow up the charts and that was a really great example. I'm kind of with Fonzie here (suprise, suprise) we are in such a single driven society that the art of the record as a whole is getting lost. The average person (especially in the age of the iPod and shuffling and all that good stuff) that I don't think that someone making a brilliant record would have the same impact. It would end up being great with the nitch music fans, but people want "what's hot" which is very rarely the same thing as what's great.

Lovenrockets is right. I was only talking about topping billboard and what have you. The question sounds like it could go either way. The critics do tend to notice these records, but they rarely top the charts and I believe it will stay that way for the most part. Nirvana was the exception that proves the rule (when it comes to music in the information age. Plus things have changed a ton even since then).
