Answers:

My advice to you is do what I did. I started playing 4 years ago. I bought a 30-dollar garage sale banjo and an instructional tape. I just wanted to see if it was something I would stick with and play. Once I realized I wanted to keep playing, I sold the banjo for $100 on ebay and bought a $300 Oscar Schmitt OB5 and case from music123.com. The sound is much better than the other banjo. I am now ready to upgrade once again to a better sounding banjo as my playing has progressed to a higher level.
My point is, don't buy a $1500 banjo and not be able to play it for what it is worth. Start with a cheap beginner instrument and upgrade as your skills improve. Gibson Mastertones are top of the line and are what many professionals use. They have pick-ups so you can plug them into an amp, and they are expensive. You might also consider Fender. They range from beginner to professional and are well made with great sound qualities.
There are countless makers of beginner banjos. As you move up the pyramid to intermediate, master, and professional banjos, the models become fewer and fewer. You can find a beginner banjo anywhere and for just about any price. Try your local pawn shop, then offer them 75% of what they are asking for it.
