I'm a beginner alto sax player in need of help!?!

Question:

I'm a beginner alto sax player in need of help!?

I'm a beginner alto sax player. I have played: est. 1 year. What strength, brand, and type of reed should i use.

Answers:

It depends on what type of mouthpiece you are using.

I like vandoren reeds, and I use a Meyer mouthpiece on Alto. There are other good brands of reeds, like Rico, Superial, LaVoz, etc.

I can only tell you what works for me, and what works for me may not work as well for you, or may not be exactly what you want.

Music is all about experimentation. You have to try different things and see what works. Even if you find a good mouthpiece and reed combination, after a few years you may decide that you want to pursue a different tone and you may need a better mouthpiece.

I would say that for a beginning player, the Selmer C* would be a decent mouthpiece to start on, or maybe even a Meyer if you want to pursue jazz. With a C* I would recommend Vandoren #3 or #3.5 reeds, and with the Meyer, I'd recommend Vandoren Java #2.5 or #3. But these are just recommendations; you will have to find what mouthpiece and reed combination that you like the best.
