How to play fast leads on the guitar cleanly...?

I REALLY enjoy listening to Yngwie Malmsteen & admire his guitar ability. How do you become comfortable playing leads cleanly but fast all over the neck of the guitar? Not trying to play professionally, just for my own enjoyment.

something that a lot of shred guitars do and i do myself when playing something extremely fast or using sweep arpeggios is by switching the pickup selection switch back so that it muffles the notes making it easier to shred without ringing any of the note. when playing fast your shredding your going to need to master tremolo speed picking, string skipping and being able to switch strings while playing at top speed so master the tremolo picking if you havent already. now, with the pickup switch you can switch it back and forth during different parts of soloing so if you want to play a pinched harmonic or to use the whammy bar its a good idea to switch the switch from back to forwards because the pickups pick up harmonics better when its switched all the way forward and has activated all pickups. another cool technique is to palm mute all the strings and to play fast on the upper strings.
