Is protest music futile?!

Question:

Is protest music futile?

back in 1983, the Punk band Bad Religion was cranking out loud, angry, intelligent, and occaisionally melodic rants against all who attempt to cause human sufferering. in the late 80s, they did a split release with professor noam chomsky doing spoken word on one side, and angry rock on the other, to protest the Gulf War. nearly 20 years later they're doing the exact same thing. the president even has the same name. i was reading an interview following the release of their new 2007 album "New Maps Of Hell" in which they were deeply frustrated about this. and i know hippies did it long before they did. is protest music truly useless, or will it just take more effort? will people always choose passive, prefabricated entertainment instead of honest art?

and you can't say that its stylish to be a rebel now, because if everyone was a real rebel, we wouldn't have the problems. if everyone truly hated bush, then he would get impeached. people are just lazy i guess.

Answers:

Depends, pick an issue that YOU can do by yourself to change works better than group efforts. Example, Rise Against promotes PETA in their songs and at their shows. Members of PETA actually go to every show to do simple things like pass out their 'shock' materials and pass around petitions to sign on issues that affect them. I've seen people turn vegetarian or vegan from Rise Against support. Bad Religion is one of the longest running punk bands trying their hardest to change things. Unfortunately their message doesn't spread far enough outside of what the band can do. The people that listen to their music would have to do a lot to make a change. I love Bad Religion and think they have a great message.
