How do I create my own record label?!

Question:

How do I create my own record label?

I'm a solo singer/musician wanting to release my music on my own label. Whats involved and is it expensive?

Answers:

1. Copyright your songs. Use form SR on the Library of Congress website (loc.gov). $45 fee
2. Register as a composer with BMI. I cant remember the fee. Like $50 or so.
3. Register as a publishing company with BMI. The fee was $150 seven years ago. Probably higher now. By registering w/BMI as a publisher, you become a publisher. Note that BMI and ASCAP are the organizations that will collect royalties for you if your stuff gets played on the radio.
4. Print some CDs. 1000 cds from discmakers.com is $1200. With discmakers, they will also set it up so your discs are available for purchase through cdbaby.com and also eMusic.com for downloads.
