Who are some good Salsa artists?!

Question:

Who are some good Salsa artists?

Im starting to get into salsa a little more because of my spanish background. Can anybody please recommend some good and famous salsa artists to listen to? Thanks.

Answers:

The first list was good for classic salsa, but actually Elvis Crespo is a merengue artist, but some people don't differentiate between salsa and merengue, or even cumbia for that matter.

Celia Cruz is indeed a good place to star, although her old stuff was better than her newer stuff in my opinion. Actually much classic salsa was originally released under the Fania label and there has recently been a big project of re-mastering all the Fania releases. I would recommend that you look into some of those.

Also keep in mind that Salsa differs from country to country. A lot of what is heard in the US comes from New York and Puerto Rico. Artists such as Victor Manuell, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Andy Montañez, Spanish Harlem Orquesta, etc.

From Colombia some of the most popular groups are Grupo Niche, Joe Arroyo, La Sonora Carruseles.

From Venezuela, and certainly should be at the top of any list, Oscar D'Leon.

From Cuba Orquesta Revé, Los Van Van, Paulo FG, Issac Delgado, La Charanga Habanera, Bamboleo, Azúcar Negra, Salsa Mayor, Pupy y los que son son, ...and many more.

You might try searching for artists at YouTube. There are videos there, some are just fan video quality, but it will give you an idea of some of the styles of the artists and then you can go buy the CDs of the artists you like.
