Question:

What is the small object that singers wear in their ears when singing in front of a live band?

They are usually a light gray or brown color. What is their purpose?

I would appreciate your answer.

Answers:

They are probably in-ear monitors that they can listen to themselves sing in. Or, they might be ear plugs that dampen the sound if the volume is very high, so they can protect their hearing. More likely, they are in-ear monitors for listening to what they are doing to make sure it is going out correctly. Its miserable to sing and not be able to hear what you are doing because you wind up trying to over-correct all the time which just makes things worse. I was in a band once and they weren't going to let me have a monitor. I told them that no monitor = no me and a whole lot of other people. I got my monitor. They are a necessity.
