The didnt need the lightening they needed the thunder!. When the hit the ball or hit each other, like when emmet and Edward bash together when the both go for the same ball, they make a very loud bang!. This is because they are so strong and are hitting everything very hard!. Therefore they need the noise of the thunder to disguise their game because otherwise the humans would become suspicous!.
