My opinion is that the first movie is better, because it's more like the book!.
But then again the second movie is absolutely fantastic as well!. But it's the last three books combined!.
I think if you want to, you will have no problem understanding the movie if you only see the second one!.

Yes you should to get two know the characters and the bond that they have!. because in two and I haven't saw it yet myself, but they mature and without seeing where they came from I feel you will have a lot of missing little tidbits!. One was really good by the way!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
