Interesting query and, curiously enough, I believe Argento collaborated once with Romero when he produced one of Romero's movies!.
But on with the question!. I'm really torn here because I consider both George Romero and Dario Argento masters in the horror genre!. Romero is in a class of his own for having invented the 'zombie movie' on his own, with "The Night of the Living Dead"!. His approach is raw and documentary like, and when others said that his "Dead" series of films are the best they were absolutely right!
Argento is something else: like Romero, his approach to filming horror sequences is raw, and yet it's more than that!. I once saw one of his films, not sure if it was 'Suspiria', and almost threw up! Argento staged the single most graphic, gut-wrenching, bloody and gross slaying/killing scenes in that movie!. But they were also superb because they were so well done, with classy cinematography and all that!. Thus, in that capacity I would say Dario Argento is more creative than Romero, and also more provocative cos he's not afraid to throw in heavy eroticism, and his style is more graceful or elegant if you will!.
But please be aware that I'm not denigrating Romero here!. I'm just saying both men excel in their styles and they are, as I said previously, masters in their field of expertise!.

Note: Romero's trilogy of the Dead is no more, because now you'd have to add 'Land of the Dead' (2005) and the recent 'Diary of the Dead' (2007)!. What do you call it, a quintet or something, cos they're five now instead of three!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

i would pick romero as i have seen several of his films [and yes the dead films are best]

but i am desperate to see a true argento film [only seen his additions to the "masters of horror" collection ]
he seems pretty dang good though Www@Enter-QA@Com

I would have to agree with you that Dario Argento is the master!. "Suspiria" is incredible, and so is "The Stendahl Syndrome"!. Argento adds a certain amount of classiness to the horror genre!.
