If you remember at the beginning of the movie the woman who is hitch hiking that they pick up tells them something about her baby, then kills herself, because she knows of the evils in the place they are going and can't stand to go back there!.

Well you know that the hitchhiker at the the very beginnig who pulls out a gun out from her dress, sticks it in her mouth and shoots herself well i think that was her little child so Erin (Jessica Biel) then goes in to rescue the baby before it faces the same fate as her friends!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
If I remember correctly, it was simply because she wanted to save the baby from being raised as part of the "family!." I read the novelization years ago, and I think it explained more about how the baby's parents were killed by Leatherface et al!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
