First off I have to agree with "snark" !.!.!. one Saw movie was more than enough!. That being said there WERE very good reasons why Lucas made them in the order that he did and NONE of the reasons given by "Teddy007" are very valid!.
When Lucas first came up with the story for Star Wars there were actually 12 parts to it!. This fact is easy to prove since his first working title for The Empire Strikes Back was 2 of 12!. He soon realized that wouldn't work and cut it down to 9!. Lately Lucas has been trying to do his version of revisionist history by saying that there were only ever 6 movies and that the movies were to be the story of Anakin Skywalker!. Now this is his story and he can pretty much say whatever he wants to but his statements of late are BS and no one knows it more than George!. The simple fact of the matter is that the six movies, seven if you count the animated one, of the Star Wars saga that we have now bear little resemblance to the story Lucas first started out with!. The saddest part of it is that if Lucas were to come out and say "Yeah, that was what the story was originally but I decided to change some things" then we wouldn't have this mess he's gotten himself into!. As for why he did them out of order one of the biggest reasons is that ep IV is the only one of the 6 that could be seen as a "stand alone" movie!. By that I mean it had a beginning and an end !.!.!. if the movie had flopped no one would have ever had to know that there was more to the story!. Another big reason was that the special effects of that era were almost nonexistent !.!.!. all the things we see in the OT (Original Trilogy of ep 4 - 6) were things they made up as they went along!. In hind sight this was the dawning of a new age of movie making!. We would not have half the great movies of any kind that use massive CGI stuff because without Lucas and his FX guys because they are the ones who said !.!.!. "How are we going to do that" !.!.!. "I don't know, just find a way"!.
When it comes to ep 7 - 9 we DO know that they won't be made!. The simple reason is that they no longer exist in their original form!. When Lucas cut the number of episodes down from 12 to 9 he broke them into 3 trilogies!. The first was to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker !.!.!. the second was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker !.!.!. the third was to be about the "other Skywalker" that Yoda mentions in ep V!. Most of the stuff that would have been in that last trilogy was used to tie up all the loose ends in ep VI!. Leia didn't become the "other Skywalker" until Lucas was writing the final duel between Vader and Luke in ep VI!. Lucas was stumped on what reason could he find to make Luke attack his father in a dark side fueled rage!. He solved this problem by making Leia the "other Skywalker" and having Vader threaten her!. That one change had two major effects on the Star Wars story!. First it made fans think ewwww !.!.!. he kissed his sister twice !.!.!. on the lips !.!.!. and second it eliminated the third trilogy!. There are new rumors out all the time that Lucas has decided to make ep 7 - 9 but they are simply not true !.!.!. end of story!. Most of these insane rumors come from one source !.!.!. Teddy007 is right about the books !.!.!. as it stands right now the books have gone 40 + years into the future after ep VI !.!.!. Dark Horse comics has a storyline running right now that is set about 130 years after the events of ep VI!. There are books out there, namely the Thrawn Trilogy of "Heir To The Empire", "Dark Force Rising", & "The Last Command", that could be used for ep 7 - 9 but the problem with that is that the "Big 3" of Han, Luke, & Leia are still main characters in the books as that trilogy of books is set only 5 years after the events of ep VI!. Harrison Ford told Lucas in 1995 that he wasn't interested in reprising his role as Han Solo, in truth Lucas had to almost beg Ford to be in ep VI because Ford thought that dying in a block of carbonite was the most fitting end for the character of Han Solo!. Mark Hamil has said that he would love to reprise his role and while there hasn't really been anything official said by Carrie Fisher her metal bikini days are far, far behind her!. Lucas might be able to pull it off if he took the story far into the future to a time when the "Big 3" are dead and their children are saving the galaxy!.
The future of Star Wars is in animation!. We already have one animated movie and the animated series that is currently running on The Cartoon Network !.!.!. I don't know if there will be more animated movies on the big screen but given the fact that the current animated series is doing so well I wouldn't be surprised to see Lucas turn his animation department loose on the books!. There is also a live action TV show that will be coming in the fall of 2010!. It will be set in between ep III and ep IV and tell the story of how the Rebel Alliance was formed and their early battles against the Empire!.

From what I understand Lucas did IV, V, and VI first because he felt that it told the heart of his nine part movies!. Then he did the first 3 when he felt it was right!. I guess beings there were numerous books about what happens after Episode VI he didn't want to do those 3!. I doubt we will see the last 3 but you never know!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
