For dramatics--McMurphy had more to lose than the Chief!. Prior to his lobotomy which left him neurologically disabled, McMurphy was witty, bright, adventuresome and defiant--all rolled up into one!. Too, it's McMurphy who is the catalyst of this story!. He's the one whom Nurse Ratched is most threatened by!. The Chief, though tall and of massive physical strength, doesn't frighten and openly defy and embarrass Nurse Ratched!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Because the evil Nurse Ratchett had it out for McMurphy and was not going to let him lead the others away from her control!. After they had finally broke McMurphy the Chief realized the only way to save his friend was to put him out of the misery that he never wanted to become!.
