They are essentially the same movie, but Willy Wonka was done far more recently and it gives a better background for Willy!. also the songs are different!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

IMHO, Willy Wonka was a lot lighter in terms of it's overall tone as well as heading towards the "musical" side and aimed towards children as were many movies like this were typical of 60's & 70's films (eg: Mary Poppins, Sound of Music)!.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory however was an outlet for the unusual talents of Tim Burton, was less about the songs/music and had his signature quirkyness giving this version, a more darker, scarier feel to it that is apparently alot closer to Roald Dahl's book than the film with Gene Wilder!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

To be honest chances are if you are a huge Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory fan (the older gene wilder one) than it's likely you won't like the new Charlie and the chocolate factory as much!. I am a die hard fan of the first film and despite my love for Burton I just could not get into Charlie, the characters were too unlikeable Willy included and I didn't care for the backstory!. And I hated the new Oompaa Loompas and I thought the music was bad!. That being said I still think you should see it and make your own decision, I just felt overall it was an unnecessary remake/retelling (I added that for people who will say it's not a remake) of a classic film, although it was closer in story to the book that doesn't mean it was a better film!.
I am aware I will get many thumbs down for speaking ill of a Depp film, but I believe in judging a film based on how good it is as a whole, not just because some actor in it is hot!. Sorry but Depp's wonka was no good, Gene Wilder did a much better job!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well the newer version is actually more darker and true to roald dahls novel "charlie and the chocolate factory"!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.alot of people dont actually realise roald dahl was a creative genius with a rather dark sense of humour!.!.!.!.read his book "revolting rhymes"!.!.!.!.!.!.i actually thought tim burton had guts recreating such a classically made film !.!.!.and still love the older version !.!.!.!.but unlike most i gave the remake a chance and found it [although same in plot --as it was still the same story-- very fresh and original in many ways]!.!.!.alot about wonka's upbringing and father is revealed !.!.!.!.aswell as some small more indepth scenes !.!.!.!.!.it is not like the original [sugar coated happy bs all the way possible!.!.!.where old farts celebrate even though they look like they are dying of tb or something!.!.!.that kinda always annoyed me lol!.!.!.!.]
basically if you can be prepared to watch this as an independant film !.!.!.not as a remake !.!.!.go for it !.!.!.i loved it!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Willy Wonka is a lighter version and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is darker, as the movie is a lot cornier!.
Willy Wonka was played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp and I think Johnny Depp is a great actor hand down, but Gene played better as Mr!. Wonka!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Have you read the book!? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a lot more factual compared to the book!. I don't wanna ruin the movie for you and all, but if you've read the book you'll get the idea!. The new one is a lot creepier with Johnny Depp as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Johnny Depp! He is an awesome actor and plays his character well!. However, the basic plot is about the same!. I would recommend watching it!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
