Answers:
The director's intention is that Ofelia does NOT die, but is rewarded with life reunited with her parents in her father's kingdom!. Her life on earth ends, yes, but she is happier with her parents in the mythical underworld!.

People have interpreted to be that the fantasy world is all in her head, and that she just dies and her story ends, but this is a much sadder ending!. I prefer the director's version- and that's the one that counts anyway!. :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's left up to the viewer's discretion to decide what happens to Ofelia!. Ofelia runs away, taking her baby brother with her, and runs into the labyrinth!. Her father follows her, and levels a gun at her!. She then hands over her baby brother so that he won't be hurt, and her stepfather, the captain, promptly shoots her!. As she lies dying, we see a scene materialize onscreen!. In the scene, Ofelia is standing in the middle of a huge throne room!. There, she is welcomed by Pan, who appears to be some sort of jester to the majesties that keep court there!. The royalty tells her that she has proved herself to be worthy, by sacrificing herself to save an innocent (her baby brother)!. They welcome her as one of their own!.
The point of the ending is that it is ambiguous!. We don't know if Ofelia has actually been accepted into this strange, fantastical family that lives in an alternate world, or if this entire last scene is a fantasy she concocts in order to distance herself from the horrors of what is happening to her!. However, in the last scene, we hear a voice-over that says something like, "However, you can still see signs of the princess [Ofelia], if you look!." Then, we see a beautiful flower growing on the ugly tree where Ofelia completed one of her tasks, by taking a gem from the stomach of a toad!. Thus, it is implied that Ofelia was actually experiencing her "fantasy" scene - she didn't just make it all up!.
It's an excellent movie, but indeed hard to understand!. I recommend watching it again with this in mind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I agree with Ivan!. I also loved this movie!. When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was gonna be one of those Harry Potter type movies, sorry- not really a fan of those books/movies!.!.: /

My take on the movie, would in a way, co-incide with the whole Bible story, in a way!. Again, sorry to drag religion in here, but if you ever read the Bible (King James version) or know of it- then you would understand!.!.

God sent Jesus to earth to do a task, sacrifice himself and do the right thing and shed his blood for another( in Jesus' case, the whole world), and in the end, be rewarded by sitting on the right beside his Father in heaven!.
And in the movie, it's somewat similar, only she is a girl, and for her- it was her step-brother for who she sacrificed her blood for!. But I guess you can say, she did die but just moved on into a spiritual world !? Cos she did pass 'the test!?'

~ just my honest and humble opinion!.
Hey! remember, you asked!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

there is no right answer, but there are clues to sway you either way!. of course it could be real or it could be ofelias imagination!. i swing between the two, but the thing that tends to push me towards it being real is the fact that ofelia got through a locked door to get to her brother!. but you can really read it either way, its entirely up to youWww@Enter-QA@Com

It was really sad, she was shot and killed by the step father but was then taken into the world she longed to live in where she was queen, or princess, I cant remember which Www@Enter-QA@Com
