In American History X....?!

Question: In American History X!.!.!.!.!?
we just finished watching the movie in one of my classes, and I didn't understand, what was it that the guys were doing in the prison that made Derek (played by Edward Norton) not like his own race!? I didn't really understand it when they were trading something in the courtyard!. Could someone explain it for me please!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
Derek was a neo-nazi and as such believed that white people were far better than anyone else and should not be seen talking or interacting with blacks, hispanics, basically anyone who wasn't white!.

In prison he sees a bunch of guys who he believes also share his views buying drugs from some black guys and thinks they are complete hypocrites, and wrong for even being near a black guy!. As such he severs his ties from them and isolates himself from everyone as he is the only white supremacist who is remaining 'true' to the cause!.

It's around this time that he gets helped out by a black or hispanic guy in prison, and whilst he ignores him at first, Derek eventually comes to realise that black and other people are not second class citizens and he has been wrong all the time!.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer for you!. It's an amazing film and you're really lucky to cover such a hard hitting film in a course!. Wish I could've!Www@Enter-QA@Com

derek believed that the white race is superior and that they shoudn't even bother with anyone 'below" them, but in the prison, they mixed and interacted for drugs, and derek didn't like it and believed they were hypocrites!.

i haven't watched the movie in a while, but i'm pretty sure that's the gist of thingsWww@Enter-QA@Com
