!.!.!.you DO have an observant point, as far as assuming that Euro-filmmaker Dario Argento's violent and tension-enshrouded mystery/thriller, "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage", as well as the more senior Euro-director Mario Bava's multiple-murder chiller/shocker "Bay of Blood" (!.!.!.although, for myself, I always preferred the alternate, and more eclectically disturbing title, "Twitch of the Death Nerve"), both being early and pioneering examples of the now-notorious 'slasher/splatter' film genre!.!.!.

!.!.!.however, let me expound upon this assumption, in saying that these two films were definitely vanguard examples in exuding an unflinching, no-holds-barred, in-your-face, seemingly Grand Guignol style into the 'slasher' film proceedings; in addition, "Twitch of the!.!.!.!.er, excuse me, I mean, Bay of Blood" incorporated the classic 'ten little indians' murder/mystery concept, which was common in the famed Agatha Christie stories, in that a select number of victims are selectively and systematically dispatched in rather unusual and gruesome manners, and has since become prevalent in the seemingly infinite number of horror films, which were produced in the late '70's, through the late '80's!.!.!.!.

!.!.!.as far as the origins of the cinematic 'slasher' film, with regards to outright visceral shock, one might have to go back as far as famed director Alfred Hitchcock, and his classic 1961 horror excursion, known as "Psycho"; in fact, one might even go back as far as the campy and staged productions of early filmmaker (!.!.!.aptly named) Tod Slaughter, and his pioneering 'slasher' film productions!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The slasher film really didn't take off until the mid 60's and it was primarily an underground movement!.

Elements of the slasher film could be found in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho!. It has all of the slasher elements that later came into play but was the first to really show a murder on camera!. While it wasn't particularly gory it did show all of the elements of the stalk and slash genre to come!. The killer wore a mask, killed with a rather large implement (butcher knife) and dispatched the bodies only to be found later on!. This was all based on the real serial killer story of Ed Gein!. While the true story was changed dramatically for this movie the part of the killer keeping bodies around him and having a mother fixation was certainly covered in the film!.

The element of gore didn't actually come into play until the 1963 drive in classic of Herschel Gordon Lewis's Blood Feast!. This movie was the first to show a killer graphically slaughter his victims!. It took Psycho but pushed it to the next level with violent evisceration shown!. These 2 films created the "formula" that would later become popular in films like Twitch of the Death Nerve and the Italian gaillo films of the period that would eventually bring about the more modern slashers that we are so fond of to this day!.
