Answers:
That depends on how you define hero!.

There are plenty of movies out there with a gay protagonist (or protagonists) in them, but I'm not sure you'd define most of them as "heroes" per se!.

Certainly now that J!.K!. Rowling has let the cat out of the bag, the answer will shortly be "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"!. I'm going to pick that one singularly because it's the only movie produced after the detail was revealed!.

There's also the 1996 movie "Breaking the Code"!. It's about Alan Turing, who may not be the most action oriented man in history, but he was the man responsible for breaking the Nazi Enigma code and enabling the Allies to win World War II, and he was gay!.

He was also subsequently arrested and convicted by the British after World War II when it came out he was gay, forced to undergo hormone treatments, and ended up commiting suicide!. Well, some people say it was an accident, but the man ate an apple covered in cyanide powder!. That's suicide!.

You also have the movie Alexander, in which is was heavily implied Alexander the Great and Hephaistion were both gay and in love with each other!. I can't think of a hero more archetypal than Alexander was!. I think the movie brings up a good point about gay heroes, though (for that matter, so does the Dumbledore thing)!.

I think the trouble with having a gay character as a hero in a mainstream movie is that homosexuality is still a distraction in society!. If you make the hero gay, instead of it being just another detail about them like it should be, suddenly it becomes the focus of things!.

You can't just throw "gay" out there and then move on from it!.

"Hi, I'm Bob this is my boyfriend Ste!.!.!. oh my God! Aliens are landing! Grab your guns!"

Nothing doing, really!. Everyone's going to be screaming "hey, back up! What were you saying about him having a boyfriend!?!"

There were controversies surrounding both Alexander and Harry Potter once it came out they contained a hero who also happened to be gay!.

Everything else about the plot stopped being important* as people had to yell about whether or not a gay person could, in fact, be a hero!. There were meetings, there were lawsuits threatened (no kidding, the country of Greece tried to sue Oliver Stone), there were boycotts!.!.!. oh the humanity!

It seems gay can't be just another background detail of a character yet!. If you're going queer, that better be the focus of the character in your movie, or so help us, we'll never let you live it down that something more important might have been going on in your plot!.

Addendum:

I just found a great list of gay movies and television shows!.
