THE 39 STEPS was a great thriller for 1935, especially in comparison with 1959 remake!.
SHADOW OF A DOUBT 1942 was his own favourite but many critics have wondered why!. Perhaps he enjoyed toying with the ambivalence of the character played by usually-nice-guy Joseph Cotten!.
REAR WINDOW 1954 posed a challenge to him as potentially a one-scene wonder!. Unusually for such claustrophobic scenarios, it was from a short story (It Had to Be Murder) and not a play!.
NORTH BY NORTHWEST 1959 contains the crop-duster plane episode which is among the all-time memorable cinema scenes, such as the Bullitt car chase and Hitch's shower scene in Psycho!.
