Surprised no one else mentioned it, but Marisa Tomei!. I don't believe in the conspiracy theories or Jack Palance accidental reading the wrong name!. But a look at her competition: Judy Davis in Husbands and Wives, Joan Plowright in Enchanted April, Vanessa Redgrave in Howards End and Miranda Richardson in Damage!.
In terms of popularity context, I've always wondered if the fact that Marissa was the only American had any effect on the American voters!. She was enjoyable in the role!. And while I've always thought comedies don't get enough respect come awards time, I didn't think it was a great performance, and certainly not compared to those other actresses and their performances in those films!.

I've always felt that Paul Newman shouldn't have gotten the Oscar for "The Color of Money," he should have gotten it for "The Verdict!." In 1982, though, Ben Kingsley had made "Ghandi" and was so good that he easily earned the statue!. I feel that the Academy gave it to Newman the next year for his work the previous year!.

The above answers are right on point!. Oscars are often(although The Academy strongly denies it) are popularity contests,a chance to settle scores,often to teach someone a lesson,you name it!. "The Greatest Show On Earth" is a prime example of this!. It was overlong,melodramatic and downright cheesy,and yet!.!.!.

There's even a sort of "club' consisting of actors who should have,but never did win in a competitive category bringing about the need for a Special Oscar for the body of their work!. Ratatouille shouldn't have gotten the oscar for best movie!. While it's still a fantastic movie I think Surf's up should have!. Persepolis was too boring ang was really slow!. Surf's up had great animation, it was hilarious, and the acting was amazing!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
