The Omen (original 1976 version) is in my opinion one of the best of classic horror!. Excellent in just about every way!.

The Changeling is a little-known but excellent horror/suspense movie from 1980, with good writing and acting!. I hear there's a remake coming out but I wouldn't bother, judging from other recent (crappy) remakes!.

The Others is newer and better-known, but is a good story with lots of spooky atmosphere!. I don't know if I would actually call it horror per-se, but it deals with the supernatural and there are quite a few very eerie, suspenseful moments!. One of my favorite movies in any genre!.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is also some great classic horror, and even the remake was pretty decent I thought (at least compared to other horror remakes)!.

The Evil Dead series, especially Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, are definitely over the top and extremely gory even by today's standards but I would absolutely recommend since they are fun, ridiculous and hilarious, with one of the greatest main characters ever, "Ash" played by Bruce Campbell!. Lots of great corny one-liners!. These can be watched many times over and still be enjoyable!.

Poltergeist is a classic from the 80's!. I believe this was the first horror movie I ever saw and still one of my favorites!.

The Exorcist has already been mentioned several times, but this list would feel incomplete if I did not include this as well!. One of the best movies ever made IMO!.

Several of David Lynch's films, while really not horror, tend to explore scary and disturbing elements of the human psyche!. Many people find his work too weird and confusing, and much of it is open to interpretation but he creates an atmosphere that I find way creepier and more disturbing than anything of the splatter-gore variety!. I could go on and on -this is my all-time favorite director- but I'll just say he comes closer to bringing to the screen the actual feeling of a nightmare than any filmmaker that I know of (see the "Winkie's" scene in Mulholland Drive!. Actually, see the whole movie, although it may take several viewings to really understand!. Trust me it does make sense)!.

Another excellent movie in the psychological horror/thriller vein is Jacob's Ladder!. If I had to choose the scariest movie I've ever seen, this would be it!. Sort of confusing at times and non-linear like Mulholland Drive, but still well worth multiple viewings!.

Some of these are more mainstream, and chances are you've seen at least some of them but if not they may be what you're looking for!. I agree that most horror movies these days are terribly written and acted!. There were lots of awful horror movies of past decades as well, but the better ones tend to survive the ages, so check out some independent movie rental stores and chances are you'll find some!. also look up some of your favorites on Amazon!.com, scroll down the page and check out lists of movies that others have created that include these films!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't know, this is a vey personal question!. I'm not saying "The Blair Witch Project" is the scariest movie I've ever seen, but I sure as hell didn't go camping that summer!.

Other than that, the 70's horror was pretty good!. The original Amityville Horror, The Shining, The People Under the Stairs (80's, I know)!. These are things that were scary to me!. I think they bore these younger kids!. I always liked the old zombie movies, but I'm a fan of the concept!.!.!. it's not like they were that scary!.

Enjoy!

Edit: to someone elses point: I VERY much enjoyed The Ring!.!.!. one of the best, more recent movies I've seen!.!.!. never saw the second one!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
