How was The Exorcist NOT recognized in AFI's 100 All-Time list??!

Question: How was The Exorcist NOT recognized in AFI's 100 All-Time list!?!?
The Exorcist, the highest grossing horror film of all time STILL TODAY, was not recognized in AFI's 100 list!.

This just baffles me, especially when you consider the criteria for the selection:

Major Award Winner: CHECK! William Peter Blatty won Best Screenplay at the Oscars!.

Popularity Over Time: CHECK! Still much-discussed and considered a rue horror classic by many film peers!.

Historical Significance: CHECK! Was the highest grossing film of all time before Star Wars was released!. Was the first to introduce 'staggered' cinema releases, a model still used by the major studios today!

Cultural Impact: CHECK! Show me a movie, TV show, book or anything feature demon possession or supernatural events and I'll show you something that is without-a-doubt inspired by The Exorcist, whether the filmmakers know it or not!.

This is just absolutely absurd!. I have lost all respect for AFI and their ridiculous lists!. Anyone agree!? Disagree!?

Answers:

That is pretty absurd!. It SHOULD be a part of the list of all time greats!.!.!.!.especially considering it is #3 on their 100 Thrillers list

And also in the 100 greatest villians!.!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I completely agree, Captain Howdy -- (By the way, great and sneaky nod to Regan's "friend" with your Yahoo Answers name!) -- That movie scared the living daylights out of me, having watched it when I was 9 years old, and I had nightmares for months! I am very sure that had they kept the "spider-walk" scene in it, I would have refused to go up ANY stairwell for a year; that is, after I regained consciousness!!!

Not only should that movie have made it to the top 100, it should have easily hit the top 5; if not #1!!!!Www@Enter-QA@Com

You have an interesting argument about The Exorcist!. It appears as though The Exorcist meets all the criteria delineated by AFI, and it was nominated for several dozen awards including Academy Awards and Golden Globes!.

I guess it might just be a matter of preference in terms of deciding which films are most deserving of the AFI honor!. Truthfully, there are probably hundreds of films that meet all of the above criteria, but being that there are only 100 positions, a lot of groundbreaking, important films were excluded from the list!.

Although The Exorcist is one of my favorite horror films, I don't know if it would make my Top 100 either, and it's only ranked at #205 on IMDB's list of the Top 250, and #16 on the IMDB Top 50 Horror movies, as voted by the fans!.

For the most part, I agree with AFI's list, and I believe that, if it were a horror movie list, Exorcist would rank quite high!. However, I don't think that it stacks up to many of the movies that are featured on the top 100 list!.

EDIT: Here's a question: I understand the reasoning behind re-evaluating the original list after ten years, but I am baffled by the appearance of certain movies, like The General (at #18)!. How could a movie rank so high in cinematic importance, and NOT even appear on the original list ten years ago, despite the fact that the movie was released in 1914!? There are several examples of this on the list: Intolerance, Nashville, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe!?, etc!. So they WEREN'T significant 10 years ago, but they are now!?Www@Enter-QA@Com
