Answers:
Alice Adams (1935)
starring Katharine Hepburn, Fred MacMurray, Charley Grapewin, Grady Sutton, Hedda Hopper, Jonathan Hale, Hattie McDaniel (Actually, it's "McDaniels" in the credits!.)
IMDb synopsis:
In the lower-middle-class Adams family, father and son are happy to work in a drugstore, but mother and daughter Alice try every possible social-climbing stratagem despite snubs and embarrassment!. When Alice finally meets her dream man Arthur, mother nags father into a risky business venture and plans to impress Alice's beau with an "upscale" family dinner!. Will the excruciating results drive Arthur away!?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!.!.!.
Hattie McDaniel's fantastic, hilarious performance as their "maid" (actually a neighbor) caused the Academy to set up two new catagories: Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor!. Film historians note that it's because Hattie was such a standout but wasn't a lead actress!. They wanted to be certain that no one would be passed up again!. Hattie steals every scene that she's in, and she barely says a word!.
"Alice Adams" has all of the scenes you describe!. Alice puts on airs, trying to pretend that they are much higher in society than they would fit, which is why they pretend to have a cook/maid!. They serve caviar (on sandwiches, unfortunately) plus endless courses of "heavy" foods when it's a humid summer evening!.
Katharine Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar but lost to Bette Davis in "Dangerous"!. They say that Bette would tell people that Kate should have won that year! I agree with her, as do many "Alice Adams" fans!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
How about "Poor Little Rich Girl"!?Www@Enter-QA@Com
