he made up so many things in his own mind, because he wanted to forget about killing that boy
most of the things he see's are hallucinations, and in the end he had to turn himself in to release the guilt

It's been a while since I've seen it, but the main character's guilt over accidently killing the kid was driving him to hallucinate/not eat/etc!. Only by turning himself in could he get rid of the guilt!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
