A film I watched in the late nineties/early 2000's, but don't remember n!

I remember watching a a science-fiction film in the late nineties or early 2000's of which the title has disappeared from my memory!. I only remember the film a couple of days ago and it's been on my mind, but I don't remember the plot very well!. I remember that there were two children, a teenage girl and her younger brother, and they travelled to some sort of a parallel universe or to space or to the future!. This other world also had children, but they were robot like or something and I distinctly remember a kid bouncing a basketball!. Then they were stuck in a room, where walls closed in or something was threatening them!. The girl then had to use her courage to face off against an evil adult person who may have created the world that they were in!. I hope this helps and rings some bells for you people!.
