Well, things are happening on two levels - "reality" and Spider's delusional system!. At first his childhood trauma seems straightforward: his father took up with a prostitute and killed Spider's mother when he was caught cheating (they are played by the same woman)!. The prostitute then pretended to be his mother, as if he wouldn't notice the difference!. Spider decides to kill her by filling the house with gas, leading to his institutionalization!.
The discrepancies between what he remembers and what really happened converge at the point when he's about to kill his landlady!. We realize that he killed his true mother, thinking she was a prostitute, and is about to kill his landlady, thinking she is the same woman!. Turns out he's just crazy!.

It's a great movie - worth watching again!. You have to pay close attention to notice what really happened in the past as opposed to his delusional memories!. I watched it three times before everything was 100% clear!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
