Character development in the star wars movies?!

Question: Character development in the star wars movies!?
Most people would agree that the star wars prequel trilogy really missed the mark, and the dialogue was terrible!. it just could have been better!. Though, I think that the original trilogy was not that great either!. In some ways, the prequel trilogy was better!.

The original trilogy had a very basic storyline, and I think that was one of its downfalls!. It never got very deep and it never really was that much of a story, considering that there was a lot of time to make a good story!. However, the simplistic story isn't my main problem with the original trilogy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

First of all Zac is WRONG when he says it was meant to start with the the newest trilogy and then move on from there!. The prequels were made to show the fall of the Republic, the rise of the Empire, the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader and to show us just what the Rebellion was fighting for!. Basically background info that shows us what happened to bring about the events of the OT (Original Trilogy)!. And don't give me that crap about "That's what George said about it" !.!.!. It would only take me about 20 minutes of searching around the net to show you a couple hundred examples of how Lucas goes back and forth on this issue!. Anyways !.!.!.

You are right about the dialog in the movies !.!.!. all 6 of them, being just short of horrible !.!.!. the best example (or is it worst example) I can give for that is the scene when Anakin & Padme are at the Lake on Naboo in ep II and are sitting there by the fireplace talking about how they feel about each other !.!.!. I don't think I have ever heard a more disjointed example of really bad dialog in my entire life !.!.!. just absolutely horrid dialog in that part!. I'm kind of split on Hayden's performance!. I didn't like him in ep II!. Horrid dialog and poor acting for most of the movie !.!.!. the duel with Dooku !.!.!. I took fencing classes when I was in college and by the end of the first session I could have parried the move Dooku made to cut off his arm without even thinking about it!. Knowing that he and Obi-Wan were due to square off in one of the most, if not the most, anticipated epic duel at the end of ep III !.!.!. well let's just say that I didn't see anything from Hayden that would point to him being anywhere good enough to make this duel the epic it HAD to be!. He changed my mind in ep III !.!.!. his portrayal of Anakin's fall to the dark side was actually pretty good!. I remember when the first "leaked" clip of him and Ewan practicing for the duel was a little Quicktime movie set to AC/DC's Back In Black !.!.!. it definitely caught my eye!. I relaxed after that because that clip showed that both of the actors were taking this duel very seriously and that they knew this duel would, in many ways, be the make or break of the prequels and maybe even the entire saga !.!.!. to say they hit it out of the park is a massive understatement!.

As for Luke !.!.!. well since he is my favorite character in the entire saga my views on him will be very bias but in reading what you said I do have to agree with some of it!. One of the things about Star Wars that I feel was a "new" way of doing things is that much of the "feeling" of the movies were done both in verbal ways and non verbal ways !.!.!. much of the emotion of the characters isn't really "talked" about !.!.!. you have to see it in their faces and their body language!. I don't know if that makes sense but I do have a part of the movies that shows this very well!. It's in Return Of The Jedi when Luke surrenders to Stormtroopers on Endor's moon and is taken to Vader!. That part of the movie is so full of non verbal emotion it isn't even funny!. Did you notice how Luke would not say that Darth Vader was his father !.!.!. as a matter of fact he went out of his way to say that Anakin Skywalker was his father!. At the end of that scene when Luke says "Then my father is truly dead" !.!.!. the amount of emotional angst that scene shows is just incredible!. At that point I thought !.!.!. oh yeah, Luke is gonna "throw down" with Vader and kick his Sith butt but as the elevator door closes and the shot pans back to Vader !.!.!. without saying a single word he showed more emotional conflict that any other character in the entire saga!. When he turned to the railing and kind of leaned on it !.!.!. if we could have seen behind the mask I would bet the farm that there would have been a couple tears running down his scared cheeks!. They even make his breathing almost skip a beat!. Later when Palpatine is "frying" him with the Sith Lightning who does Luke cry out to to help him !.!.!. not Vader !.!.!. not Anakin !.!.!. he cried out to his FATHER for help!. In that moment the little piece of Anakin that had been buried deep inside Vader all those years grabbed onto a power that can NOT be defeated !.!.!. the power of the love a father has for his son!. It was then that the brilliant presence of Anakin Skywalker ripped through the evil that Vader was and flooded back into the light side of the Force allowing him to fulfill his destiny of destroying the Sith !.!.!. not only Palpatine but Vader as well!.

In the end you have a very good point about Luke's character not being developed as well as it could have been but for me there was enough done to make Luke very easy for me to identify with !.!.!. it would seem that Luke's main goal in life was to stop the senseless deaths of those he counted as allies and friends and loved ones !.!.!. in doing that he came very close to falling to the Dark Side because he only thought about others not himself!.

I don't know if you read the books and comics about Star Wars that are out there but Luke's character does get much more development in the books !.!.!. there is even one story line in which Luke does fall to the Dark Side and becomes Palpatine's right hand man just like his father had been!. It's a long story but it can be found in the Dark Horse Comics series "Dark Empire" , " Dark Empire II", and "Empire's End"!. Surprisingly these comics were a great story !.!.!. well, Empires End did seem to be hurried and not nearly as good as the other two installments of the series!.

May The Force Be With You !.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It was meant to start with the the newest trilogy and then move on from there!. Darth Vader (aka Anakin) was supposed to be the main character who developed throughout the whole six episodes!. I'm not sure where you are coming from with this character development thing!. The episodes are meant to have time inbetween them in which the characters obviously grow and interact and whatnot!. I'm not sure if you question makes any sence!. I like Luke, he was very likable!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
